What is a cataract?
When the natural crystalline lens of human eye becomes cloudy, it is known as cataract.
Cataracts are the number one cause of poor vision among adults.

Cataract of eye

For persons who have fine visual requirements such as watchmakers, accountants or draftsmen, a mild cataract may cause enough visual difficulty to seek its early removal.

Cataracts are not caused or worsened by reading, sewing, watching television or any other normal visual activity.

Symptoms of Cataracts :

  • Many report the feeling of a film covering the eye.
  • Still others report glare from bright sunlight, irritation or poor vision when viewing oncoming automobile headlights at night.
Diagnosis of Cataracts :
A cataract is diagnosed by examining the inside of the eye with a Slit Lamp microscope. Once Diagnosed, a cataract can be removed at any time. When cataract interferes with normal daily activities such as reading the newspaper. it may be time to discuss with Dr. Doctor for an operation, to have the cataract removed.

Treatment :
There is no medication, drops or diet available that can prevent or slow down cataract formation. Surgical removal is the only known effective cure.

If surgery is delayed for any reason, a cataract will generally do no physical harm by being left untreated in the eye. However, cases may occur when unattended cataract become "over-ripe" and eventually lead to inflammation, glaucoma and permanent damage to the eye.

There are two types of surgeries available for Cataract removal:

1. The first technique is the conventional cataract surgery called Extra Capsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE). This involves removing the cloudy lens in one piece and replacing it with the new lens called the Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) . This type of surgery requires an incision of 12mm in length. Multiple stitches (4-5) are required to seal the incision.

2. The second technique is a micro incision cataract surgery called Phaco Emulsification . In this, a small highly sophisticated ultrasound instrument which is introduced into the eye, through a very narrow incision.

Localised high-frequency sound waves break up the cataract into minute fragments, which are then gently suctioned out through the instrument's hollow tubing.
A thin capsule or shell is left in place. This maintains the natural anatomy of eye and reduces the chances of complications associated with the older methods of cataract surgery. Then a new lens called Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) is implanted in its place. This method requires an incision of only 3-4 mm. This is a watertight, suture less and self-sealing procedure.

The Phacoemulsifier is inserted through the incision and will be used to break up and remove the cataract

Advantages of Phacoemulsification:

> There are no stitches.

> There is less trauma to the eye.

> Patients have improved vision sooner usually between 3 to 5 days.

> Patients can resume their daily activities almost immediately
